The Martian by Andy Weir

Ok, let me just start off by saying I LOVED this book. This is probably my favourite book of 2015 so far.

.The Martian

The Martian by Andy Weir is about a Mars astronaut called Mark Watney. After a severe dust storm pretty much as soon as they arrive in Mars, the mission has to be aborted and Mark’s crewmates end up leaving him behind thinking that he is dead. And that’s, of course, not the case.

Mark finds himself utterly alone in Mars and has to work out a way to survive for a really really long time in a place that he was only meant to stay for 31 days. With no communication with Earth or his crewmates, no food supply and faulty equipment and so on, Mark logs his time on Mars. And that’s essentially what this book is. At least for most part of it. You sometimes get other perspectives, such as the computer’s (I know!!!), his crewmates and NASA’s, but mostly it’s told from Mark’s perspective, almost in a diary form.

“I guess you could call it a “failure”, but I prefer the term “learning experience”.”

As soon as I started reading it I got the feeling that if anyone could survive in Mars it would be Mark. He is an extremely likeable character and so funny! This book is just so funny! I found myself actually laughing out loud several times, and that doesn’t usually happen with me and books.

“Yes, of course duct tape works in a near-vacuum. Duct tape works anywhere. Duct tape is magic and should be worshiped.”

This book is being shelved as science fiction but even if that isn’t usually your kind of thing, I would recommend it! It’s an extremely easy ready and you’ll just fly through it.

Rating – 10/10

The Martian is being adapted to a film too and it’s being released on September 30th in the UK. Make sure you watch the trailer below! I’m so excited for it eeeek!!!

Keep reading guys! xx
